See how many people read a Wikipedia article each day or month. Get the top articles of a day too. The tool marks spikes, when views jump fast.

## How to use it: 3 steps

1. **Follow us on Apify.** The tool is built and waits in the queue for the Apify Store. Apify is the cloud platform where our tools run.
2. **Paste your input and press Start.** No code needed: you fill in a form (the input). It already has a working example. For example: `{"project": "en.wikipedia", "title": "Artificial…` in Articles. Each start is one run.
3. **Download the results.** When the run ends, the results are in a table (the dataset). Open Output, press Export and pick Excel or CSV. JSON and the API are there too.

## What it does

Get daily or monthly Wikipedia article views, daily top articles and interest spikes from Wikimedia metrics. Add exact article titles; no API key is needed. Unavailable source data is marked clearly; a spending limit can produce a partial result.

- Articles: one row per article and UTC day, or per calendar month. Get total views, average, peak date and spike counts in the run summary.
- Top: get the most-viewed pages for one Wikipedia project and UTC day. Keep the source ranks, including ties and rank gaps.
- Spikes: compare each point with the average of the previous points. The default baseline is seven points; a spike starts at twice that average.

## Questions

### Do views show unique readers?

No. Views measure reading, not unique people or sales.

### How many articles can I track?

Up to 50 articles per run.

### What is a spike?

By default, a day with twice the average of the seven days before.

### Do I need an API key?

No. It uses public Wikimedia data.

## Data fields

- `project` (string): Normalized Wikipedia project, such as en.wikipedia.
- `article` (string): Article title with spaces. Empty on a missing top list.
- `date` (string): UTC day YYYY-MM-DD; month start for monthly buckets.
- `access` (string): Traffic access channel.
- `granularity` (string): daily or monthly.
- `provider` (string): Wikimedia Analytics API.
- `licence` (string): CC0-1.0 for these numerical metrics.
- `sourceUrl` (string): Fixed Wikimedia metrics URL for this query.
- `articleUrl` (string): Exact Wikipedia title URL. Empty for unavailable top lists.
- `fetchedAt` (string): UTC time of reading the source.
- `status` (string): complete for a view point or ranked entry, not_found for unavailable source data.
- `views` (integer): Number of views, zero preserved; null on not_found.
- `rank` (integer): Original top rank, null for series or unavailable data.
- `agent` (string): Article traffic agent; null for top because endpoint has no agent filter.
- `reason` (string): NO_DATA_FOR_TITLE_PROJECT_OR_DATE for 404; otherwise null.
- `spike` (boolean): True at or above threshold; null if missing/zero baseline or top mode.
- `spikeRatio` (number): Views divided by positive rolling baseline; null otherwise.
- `baselineAverage` (number): Mean previous spikeWindow points; null if not enough points or top.
- `sourceUpdatedAt` (string): Always null: endpoint provides no revision timestamp.

## Input settings

- `mode` (string): Article time series (needs the articles field) or a ranked top list for one UTC day.
- `articles` (array): Up to 50 objects with title and optional project (for example en.wikipedia). Required in articles mode: a run without it fails as INVALID_INPUT and the start is still charged. Exact title counts; redirects are not merged. Duplicates are removed.
- `project` (string): Project used by top mode and articles without a project. en.wikipedia.org is also accepted. Wikipedia projects only.
- `startDate` (string): Inclusive YYYY-MM-DD from 2015-07-01. Defaults to 29 days before endDate. Monthly mode requires the first day of a month.
- `endDate` (string): Inclusive YYYY-MM-DD. Defaults to two UTC days ago. Up to yesterday; at most 90 inclusive days. Monthly mode requires the last day of a month.
- `date` (string): YYYY-MM-DD for top mode. Defaults to two UTC days ago; up to yesterday. No silent fallback for unavailable dates.
- `access` (string): Traffic access channel sent to Wikimedia.
- `agent` (string): Article traffic agent. Top mode does not support this filter; keep user, output agent is null.
- `granularity` (string): Article time buckets. Monthly needs full months within 90 days. Top mode requires daily.
- `spikeThreshold` (number): Spike is true when views / average of previous spikeWindow points reaches this value. Null with insufficient or zero baseline.
- `spikeWindow` (integer): Number of previous daily or monthly points used by the rolling baseline. No extra dates are fetched.
- `maxResults` (integer): Limits saved rows including not-found rows. Top lists contain up to 1000 source rows. Stops partial on truncation.

## Step by step on Apify

1. Open Input.
2. Keep the three sample `articles`: Artificial intelligence, OpenAI and Python (programming language), on `en.wikipedia`.
3. Keep `mode` as `articles` and `granularity` as `daily`. Leave dates blank for the recent 30-day window.
4. Click Start.
5. Open Pageviews. Check `article`, `date` and `views`. Open Run summary for totals and peaks.

## Use cases

| Task | Input | Useful output |
|---|---|---|
| Follow reading activity for a brand or topic | Exact titles in articles | date, views, total, average, peakDate |
| Prepare a daily editorial topic list | top + project + date | article, rank, views, articleUrl |
| Compare language editions | Per-article projects | project, article, date, views |
| Flag changes in reading activity | spikeWindow + spikeThreshold | baselineAverage, spikeRatio, spike |

## Tips

- Use exact article titles, not links.
- A run covers up to 90 days. Use monthly mode for whole months.
- Set the project per article to mix languages.

## Limits

- Wikipedia language projects only. No country charts, article text, unique readers or edit counts.
- Up to 50 input articles and 90 inclusive days. Monthly mode needs full months; partial months are rejected.
- Top lists are for one project/day, with up to 1000 source entries. They include namespaces and may contain fewer entries.
- `user` is the default series agent. Top has no configurable agent filter.
- Source data starts in July 2015 and arrives after the UTC day ends. Two-day lag is a safe default, not a source availability guarantee.
- Renames and redirects remain separate titles. Counts can differ from a tool that combines redirect views.
- Insufficient or zero spike baseline returns null, not infinity or an invented spike.
- maxResults or charge limit: run succeeds with partial and MAX_RESULTS or CHARGE_LIMIT.
